Description
Room Occupancy monitoring uses PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors to detect when a room (zone) is occupied. When occupancy is detected, an automation trigger fires that can:
Trigger alerts for room status changes
Monitor room utilization
Integrate with facility management systems
Display occupancy status on dashboard
How It Works:
PIR Sensor: Minew MSP01 PIR sensor detects motion/occupancy
Signal Detection: Sensor sends occupancy status (empty = 0, occupied = 1)
Zone Detection: System determines which zone/room contains the sensor
Status Update: System updates room occupancy status
Alert Trigger: System triggers "Room Occupancy Alert" event
Automation Actions: Configured actions are executed
Current Support:
Only Minew MSP01 PIR sensor is supported
Sensor must be registered as a Beacon with coordinates
When to Use
Customer wants to monitor room occupancy in real-time
Hospital needs to track patient room status
Facility wants to manage meeting room availability
Organization needs to trigger cleaning when rooms become empty
Dependencies & Requirements
BLE Gateway: Compatible BLE gateway (check BLE Gateway Compatibility Matrix)
Minew MSP01 Sensor: Physical PIR sensor device
Zone Configuration: Room must be defined as a Zone on floor plan
Sensor Registration: Sensor must be registered as Beacon with floor coordinates
Configuration Steps
Step 1: Install and Register Sensor
Physical Installation: Install Minew MSP01 PIR sensor in room
Register Beacon:
Navigate to Beacons > Add New Beacon
Enter sensor MAC address
Enter sensor name (e.g., "Room 102 PIR Sensor")
Set Device Model: Select "Minew MSP01" or appropriate model
Set Location:
Location: Select location
Building: Select building
Floor: Select floor
X Coordinate: Enter X coordinate (must be within room zone)
Y Coordinate: Enter Y coordinate (must be within room zone)
Verify Zone: Ensure coordinates fall within the room zone boundaries
Save the beacon
Step 2: Configure BLE Gateway
Ensure BLE gateway is compatible with Minew sensors
Configure gateway to receive telemetry data from sensors
Verify gateway can communicate with Starling platform
Step 3: Create Room Occupancy Automation
Navigate to Workflow > Automations
Click "Create New Automation"
Configure Trigger:
Select trigger: "Room Occupancy Alert"
Configure Conditions:
Floor: Select floor containing sensor
Zone (optional): Select specific room/zone to monitor
Leave empty to monitor all rooms on floor
Add Actions:
Send Alert:
Notify when room becomes occupied/empty
Include room name, status, timestamp
Update Facility System:
Webhook to room management system
Update room availability status
Log Event:
Record occupancy changes for reporting
Save the automation
Troubleshooting
Issue: Occupancy not detected
Check: Sensor is registered as Beacon with correct MAC address
Check: Sensor coordinates are within room zone
Check: BLE gateway is receiving sensor data
Check: Sensor is Minew MSP01 (only supported model)
Check: Zone is properly defined on floor plan
Issue: False occupancy alerts
Check: Sensor sensitivity settings (if adjustable)
Check: Sensor placement (avoid direct sunlight, heat sources)
Check: Zone boundaries are correctly defined
Issue: Automation not triggering
Check: Automation is created with "Room Occupancy Alert" trigger
Check: Floor/Zone conditions match sensor location
Check: Actions are configured correctly
Use Cases
Hospital Room Monitoring: Track patient room occupancy
Meeting Room Management: Detect when meeting rooms are in use
Cleaning Scheduling: Trigger housekeeping when room becomes empty
Energy Management: Adjust HVAC based on room occupancy
